Introduction *
LigaSure vessel-sealing technology has become increasingly adopted in thyroid surgery for its ability to reduce operative time and intraoperative bleeding. However, long-term data from low-resource settings remain limited. This study reviews a decade of experience with LigaSure-assisted thyroidectomy at a Nigerian tertiary hospital.
Material & Method *
A retrospective review was conducted of patients who underwent thyroidectomy using LigaSure between 2016 and 2025 at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Data collected included patient demographics, indications for surgery, operative duration, intraoperative blood loss, complications, and length of hospital stay. Outcomes were compared across time periods to assess trends and improvements.
Results *
A total of 405 thyroidectomies were performed using LigaSure over the 10-year period. The most common indication was simple multinodular goitre. The average operative time was 48 minutes, with a mean estimated blood loss of 102mls. The most common postoperative complication was transient voice changes. Mean post-operative stay was 1.1 days. There was a progressive decline in operative time and complication rates over the study period.
Conclusion *
Over ten years, LigaSure thyroidectomy has proven to be a safe and efficient technique in our setting, with favorable outcomes and acceptable complication profile. The technology has demonstrated reliability and adaptability in a resource-constrained environment, supporting its continued use and wider adoption in similar contexts
