Introduction *
Phyllodes tumors (PT) represent 0.3–1% of all primary breast tumors and 2.5% of fibroepithelial breast neoplasms. They are classified as benign, borderline, or malignant according to stromal morphology. Evidence in Mexican patients remains limited.
Material & Method *
A retrospective review of medical records was performed for 19 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of PT. Sociodemographic data (age, residence, height, weight, BMI), histological subtype, and treatment modality were analyzed. Surgical management was categorized as breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or radical mastectomy, and the use of adjuvant chemotherapy was recorded. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.23. Normality was assessed with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Quantitative variables were reported as means ± standard deviation or medians with interquartile ranges, while qualitative variables were presented as frequencies and percentages.
Results *
Most patients came from Mexico City (31.6%) and the State of Mexico (26.3%). The majority had no comorbidities (94.7%). Tumor grading showed 26.3% low-grade, 52.6% high-grade, and 15.8% intermediate-grade PTs. BCS was performed in 78.9% of cases, while radical mastectomy was performed in 21.1%. Adjuvant chemotherapy was administered in 94.7% of patients.
Conclusion *
In this cohort, high-grade PTs predominated, and breast-conserving surgery was the most frequent approach. Further studies are needed in Mexican patients to better understand the sociodemographic profile and optimize treatment strategies for this rare disease.
