Introduction *
Ascending cholangitis, a potentially life-threatening condition, arises primarily from bacterial infections secondary to common bile duct (CBD) obstruction often associated with gallbladder stones. Traditional management typically involves a two-stage approach: initial urgent decompression via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), followed by a delayed cholecystectomy post-infection resolution. This staged approach, however, is linked with increased risks of recurrent biliary complications such as choledocholithiasis and subsequent cholangitis episodes.
Material & Method *
This case series explores the feasibility, safety, and clinical outcomes of a single-session approach combining laparoscopic cholecystectomy with ERCP for CBD clearance in a cohort of ten patients
Results *
Our findings highlight the benefits of this integrated approach, including shortened hospital stays, fewer procedural interventions, and minimal complications, suggesting a potential shift in the standard care protocol for managing ascending cholangitis.
Conclusion *
The single-session management not only mitigates the risk of recurrent biliary events but also streamlines patient care, thereby presenting a compelling alternative to the conventional two-stage management of this serious condition.
