Abstract
Oral only
The NTMC was established in Sri Lanka by the College of Surgeons, Sri Lanka, and IATSIC. Utilises the Kirkpatrick model to assess the effectiveness of trauma training. This four-level model assesses trainees' reaction, learning, behavior, and results, ensuring continuous feedback and improvement of in-service trauma care training programs.
A ten-program assessment from August 2023 measured NTMC participants’ perceptions and learning through questionnaires and pre- and post-course tests. Participants were invited to complete an online survey within two weeks of finishing the course to evaluate training effectiveness.
There were 748 [307(41%) males] NTMC participants during the study period, and 714 [82% of participants; 278(39%) males] responded to the questionnaire. Of the 714 respondents, 559(78.3%) were involved in direct trauma care. Out of 714 respondents, 671(94%) participants responded that they were not confident of knowledge on overall major trauma resuscitation and initial management before the course. During the immediate post-course evaluation, 669 (93.7%) participants were satisfied with the knowledge they gained in these aspects on average. Considering all 748 participants, the mean pre-test mark was 59.1% (Standard deviation – 13.3%), and the mean post-test mark was 67.8% (Standard deviation – 19.7%). These values showed a statistically significant improvement between the two means with a p-value < 0.0001 in the paired t-test.
NTMC significantly improves emergency trauma care knowledge and perception among participants. It is recommended that all emergency care unit doctors complete the NTMC to enhance trauma management skills and help reduce preventable trauma deaths across healthcare settings.
