Introduction *
Aim: To describe value and effect of an international orientation as well as relations and cooperations to develop intercultural competence in human medicine and, in particular, related to general and abdominal surgery.
Material & Method *
Narrative compact overview
Results *
(corner points): - A visit abroad already during the study period of human medicine is of great value and advantage. - Inclusion and mediation of ethical principles for later daily practice should be attributed a higher value and importance in study of human medicine since medical profession should not only be able to provide a specific finding- and diagnosis-related treatment and care, the physician has to assess the patient as human being within his context. - This sensitization can be optimally deepened during stays abroad, during which cultural as well as linguistic differences during daily practice in the clinic and externally need to be managed. - In this context, international research projects are of particular importance as the example of the search for a vaccine against COVID-19 has shown. - The topics “Health“ and “Treatment“ as well as “Prevention of diseases“ play an enormous role in all countries all over the world and requires international collaboration.
Conclusion *
Intercultural competence can be considered a valuable achievement and (in the era of globalization) a great good, in particular, for natural sciences. In daily clinical practice of a surgeon, this specific qualification has also become very relevant, e. g., for the treatment and care of foreign patients with limited German speaking abilities or as member of multilingual research teams.
