Abstract
Oral or Poster
The techniques for intraperitoneal and pelvic manipulation are different in robot-assisted rectal surgery (RRS), so it is unclear whether there are differences in learning period between these two phases.
This retrospective single-center study included 75 patients diagnosed with rectal malignancy who underwent RRS performed between September 2019 and May 2024. The learning curve was analyzed and compared using the cumulative sum method between the abdominal and pelvic phases.
The learning curve for total console time consisted of three phases: phase I (learning phase, cases 1–25), phase II (consolidation phase, cases 26–55), and phase III (maturing phase, cases 56–71). The learning curve for the abdominal phase was composed of two phases: phase I (learning phase, cases 1–23) and phase II (maturing phase, cases 24–71), and no consolidation phase was observed. On the other hand, in the pelvic phase, the learning phase was achieved in 27 cases, followed by the consolidation phase in 32 cases (cases 28–59) and the maturing phase in the last 16 cases (cases 60–75).
The learning period for the abdominal manipulation during RRS was shorter than that for the pelvic manipulation, in that there was no consolidation phase. Education and training that takes these points into account might be useful for more efficient learning of RRS.
