Introduction *
Obesity at diagnosis may negatively impact prognosis, yet evidence on weight change after breast cancer diagnosis is limited. Despite the high incidence of breast cancer in India, there is no study analyzing the post- diagnosis weight trajectories of females with breast cancer.
Material & Method *
Retrospective data was collected from the year 2020 till date using data available in Chemotherapy OPD of an urban tertiary care hospital for 150 patients. A proforma was designed taking into account the demographic details; details regarding the size, molecular status and grade of the carcinoma and weight trajectories.
Results *
There was an average weight loss of 1.54% as compared to the initial weight by the end of surgery and 16 cycles of chemotherapy, which was regained 1 year post surgery at an average of +2.15%. there was no significant difference between the weight changes of patients receiving neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy. The rate of attrition of participants is positively correlated with weight loss post- surgery. Weight loss in patients on AC-Taxol chemotherapy was slightly higher than patients on Trastuzumab chemotherapy. Post- menopausal status is associated with greater weight loss. 2 patients died during chemotherapy - both were associated with significant weight loss of 8kg and 10kg.
Conclusion *
As indicated by many Western studies, breast cancer survivorship guidelines promote maintaining a body healthy weight during cancer survivorship. But in the Indian scenario, there is significant weight loss in the period during and immediate post- chemotherapy. Hence, our focus should be on building adequate nutritional status during this period.
