Introduction *
Nectins are cell surface proteins that bind to each other, endothelial cells and the extracellular matrix. Deregulated expression of nectins -1 and -3 is observed in various pathologies.
Material & Method *
We assesed expression of nectin-1 and -3 in the speciments obtained from 89 different patients diagnosed with gastric cancer using immunohistochemistry methods.
Results *
Positive expression of Nectin-1 in gastric carcionma cells is associated with positive expression of MCAM (89.5% of cases, p<0.001) and Claudin-1(88.9% of cases, p=0.006). Positive expression of Nectin-3 is associated with positive expression of Tensin-4 (75% of cases, p=0.009), while patients who showed a lack of expression of Nectin-3 are observed to lack expression of CEACAM-1(81.5% of cases, p=0.020) and Tensin-1(88.6% of cases, p=0.018). Gastric adenocarcinoma with a mucinous component showed a more frequent loss of expression of Claudin-1 (p<0.001), Tensin-4 (p=0.023) and CEACAM-1 (p=0.045). Changes in adhesion protein expression have also been observed in different degrees of gastric cancer malignancy. Higher expression of Nectin-3 was more frequently observed in cases of tumours with intermediate histological differentiation while loss of expression of this protein was more frequent in undifferentiated carcinomas (p= 0.048).
Conclusion *
Various Nectin-1 and -3 expression in gastric cancer tumour cells may be dependent on the expression of other adhesion proteins.
