Introduction *
The term Metaverse was introduced to define the interaction between two worlds in which economic and socio-cultural activities take place in a unified way in real time through the presence of avatars in a virtual world. This virtual world has developed thanks to the introduction of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality and Extended Reality. The Metaverse took hold during the Coronavirus pandemic changing the vision of the doctor-patient relationship, introducing the concept of telemedicine.
Material & Method *
In a scientific collaboration between the Translational Research Group in Surgery of the Magna Graecia University, Italy, and the first Metaverse Surgical Hospital, USA, we introduced the concept of Surgical Metaverse in Italy. In this study we want to show our surgical experience in the Metaverse to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of this new technology, from telementoring to digital pathology, webinars, SOS Emergency and in-flight consultations.
Results *
During the surgical procedures, each step was described by the operators in Metaverse and the crucial phases were performed with the consent of all. Subsequently, the specimens taken from the patients were delivered to the pathologist and were shown to the surgeons present with the possibility of commenting on the enlargements and microscopic colors of the tissues.
Conclusion *
Metaverse leads to a faster growth of the surgeon's learning curve. The knowledge of surgeons miles away who operate in the same virtual operating room at the same time can be exploited at low cost. Telementoring improves safety in the operating room with an important role during emergencies.
