Introduction *
Bariatric surgery is now recognized as the treatment of choice for patients who have failed to lose weight through diet and exercise. In this study we evaluated two laparoscopic devices for their efficacy – a reusable ultrasonic device and a bipolar disposable device.
Material & Method *
This is a retrospective review of 534 patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomies by the same surgeon in a single clinic from December 2023 through to June 2024 Sleeve gastrectomies were conducted using one of two laparoscopic surgical devices, one ultrasonic and one bipolar.
Results *
A total of 534 patients were identified for analysis. Of these, 255 had surgery with the bipolar device and 279 with the ultrasonic. The two laparoscopic devices were found to be equivalent, with no differences between them in either bleeding or operating time.
Conclusion *
Performing vessel fusion with a reusable ultrasonic laparoscopic device led to no reduction in patient safety, or other key outcomes when compared to a bipolar laparoscopic device.
