Abstract

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide, MRM remains a common surgical treatment often leading to significant physical and psychological stress ,chronic pain, anxiety, and altered physiological parameters.. Raja Yoga meditation is an introspective practice, based on mindfulness, inner peace and spiritual awakening to reduce stress and improves mental well-being.Aim of study is to evaluate the impact of Rajayoga meditation on preoperative and postoperative anxiety, hemodynamic parameters, and serum cortisol levels
The study was randomized controlled trial,Sixty female patients of American Society of Anaesthesiologist (ASA) physical status II, aged 30-70 years, schedule to undergo elective MRM under general anesthesia. The patients were randomized into two groups namely, Group R, Rajayoga group (n = 30) underwent rajayoga meditation for minimum,Group C, Control group (n=30) did not receive any intervention. Anxiety was measured using STAI(State- Trait Anxiety Inventory) before the start of Rajayoga training and on second postoperative day.Serum Cortisol, heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressureand respiratory rate were also noted.
Anxiety levels, serum cortisol and haemodynamic parameters of the patients before the surgery were comparable between the two groups. However, on second postoperative day patients who underwent Rajayoga meditation had significantly reduced anxiety, heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and serum cortisol levels
Raja Yoga meditation significantly reduces anxiety, heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and serum cortisol levels
