Abstract
Oral or Poster
India is an agricultural country with high prevalence of cattle farming. These domestic animals can cause serious injuries. The injury patterns can present as a variety of bizarre, complex wounds. Aim:To evaluate the injury patterns and outcome in bullhorn injuries Objective:1)To classify the injuries sustained. 2)To compare the prevalence between urban and rural areas
A case series analysis of the patients admitted after sustaining bull horn injury to Level 1 trauma centre was conducted over 5yr. Their epidemiological parameters, injuries, management and outcomes were noted
501 patients were admitted during the 5yr duration who sustained injury due to bull horn. The mean age was 47.9 years with male: female ratio of 389:112.Most common mechanism of injury was with a combination of direct and indirect impact by the bull (54.3%). Majority patients were from rural areas (75.4%).The most common injuries were thoracic injuries in 47.8 % patients followed by abdominal injuries in 38.6% patients and perineal injury in 8.3% cases.66.2% patients required intervention of which 176 required intercostal drainage while 132 patients underwent exploratory laparotomy. The mortality rate was 9%
Bull horn injuries are a major cause of mortality and morbidity in developing countries with unregularized farming structure. Majority injuries were mixed (primary plus secondary), followed by primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary injuries. There is need to address and prevent these under-reported injuries by formulating stern rules and regulations. High urban prevalence is due to stray bulls causing road traffic accidents. Literature available perineal injuries as most common but, in our study thoracic injuries were predominant
