Introduction *
Physiotherapy is standard of care in blunt chest trauma, however yoga also has shown promise in improving both physical and psychological outcomes recently. This study evaluates the comparative effectiveness of yoga-based therapy and conventional physiotherapy in patients with isolated blunt chest trauma
Material & Method *
A prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted on 241 adult patients with isolated chest trauma. Participants were randomized into two groups. The physiotherapy group received standard chest rehabilitation, including postural drainage, percussion, breathing exercises, and mobilization. The yoga group received a structured program involving pranayama and asanas, delivered by a trained yoga instructor. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and 12 weeks using WHOQOL-BREF, and PROMIS-29 (Patients Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System) profile.
Results *
In PROMIS analysis, a statistically significant improvement was shown in Physical Function, Social activities, pain interference and pain intensity in Physiotherapy group (p<005). These improvements were consistent in both ITT and PP analyses. While significant improvement was shown in Anxiety and Depression components in Yoga group in PP analysis (p<0.05). In WHOQOL-BREF analysis, a statistical significant improvement was shown in Domain 1 (Physical Health), Overall Quality of life and health in Physiotherapy group in ITT analysis. While in PP analysis, improvement was shown in Domain 3 (Environmental domain) in Physiotherapy group and Domain 2 (Psychological) in Yoga group (p<0.05)
Conclusion *
Physiotherapy was effective for physical recovery, while yoga provided psychological benefits. A combined approach may offer optimal outcomes in blunt chest trauma rehabilitation.
