Abstract
Oral or Poster
Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is a morbid condition for patients. There are so many procedures described in literature; however, no one is the definitive procedure to prevent recurrence rates. The purpose of this observational study was to evaluate the efficacy of fibrin glue as a treatment for pilonidal sinus.
This observational study was conducted in tertiary health care and included 30 patients with pilonidal sinus disease. All patients underwent fibrin glue application in the affected area after debridement under local anesthesia. The primary objective was to assess the recurrence rate. Other variables included pain, duration of procedure, hospital stay, return to work, postoperative infection, and satisfaction.
The mean operative duration was 30.3 min. The mean VAS score at 6 hours and 24 hours was 3.4 and 2.2, respectively. The mean hospital stay and return to work were 2.86 and 36.6 hours, respectively. Five patients (16.6%) had a recurrence within 12 months. However, 66.7% of patients were satisfied, 16.6% were dissatisfied, and the rest were neutral in their opinions. Two patients (6.7%) developed minor SSI and one patient (3%) had chronic pain at the local site.
Fibrin glue application as monotherapy in pilonidal sinuses is safe and effective. The results are superior to those of off-midline flap techniques and endoscopic procedures. Using this daycare procedure may lead to a reduction in morbidity associated with extensive tissue excision, hospital stay and recurrence, as well as improved satisfaction with an early return to work.
