Introduction *
Mucinous carcinoma Appendix is a rarity. In the majority of cases, these tumors are discovered after appendectomy from histopathology. Treatment may include appendectomy and/or right hemicolectomy depending on factors such as histological type, tumor size and lymph node/organ involvement. The aim of this case study is to describe a rare case of mucinous carcinoma of appendix and raise awareness of this condition and its management options and follow-up protocol.
Material & Method *
Case summary: a 35 years aged male presented with features suggestive of acute appendicitis. His leucocyte count was raised and ultrasound reported dilated appendix. CT abdomen added few mesenteric lymph nodes in addition to dilated appendix. Appendicectomy performed and specimen subjected to histopathology which turned out as mucinous carcinoma of appendix. Further metastatic workup was carried out which was unremarkable. Case was included in follow-up.
Results *
not applicable as it is a case report
Conclusion *
Mucinous carcinoma of appendix is rare and can be diagnosed after histopathology. Therefore, every suspected appendix should be sent for histopathology and required metastatic workup including CT abdomen should be performed to avoid further morbidity and mortality.
