Abstract
Oral or Poster
Colonic diverticular disease poses an increasing burden on healthcare systems, with a sustained rise in both prevalence for episodes of acute diverticulitis. Several studies have identified obesity as a risk factor for the development of complicated diverticulitis.
A retrospective, cross-sectional analysis was conducted on a cohort of 52 patients diagnosed with acute diverticulitis.Patients were categorized based on BMI, dichotomized as ≤30 and >30.The severity of diverticulitis was assessed using the Hinchey classification system, stratifying cases from stage IA to IV.
An association analysis was conducted between dichotomized body mass index (BMI > 30) and the severity of acute diverticulitis, as determined by the Hinchey classification. The Pearson chi-square test yielded a p-value of 0.015, indicating a statistically significant association between both variables. Additionally, the Monte Carlo simulation method was applied, resulting in a p-value of 0.009, which confirmed the significance of the association.Among the 52 patients evaluated, those with a BMI > 30 were more frequently classified in the more advanced Hinchey stages (III and IV), whereas those with a BMI ≤ 30 were predominantly found in stages IA, IB, and II.This pattern suggests obese patients are more likely to develop complicated forms of diverticulitis.
Our findings demonstrate a statistically significant association between elevated BMI and the severity of acute diverticulitis, as measured by the Hinchey classification.Patients with a BMI > 30 were more frequently distributed in advanced stages (Hinchey III and IV), suggesting a potential role of obesity as a contributing factor in the development of complicated diverticular disease,
